Breitling Chrono Superocean
Leon Breitling was a certified watchmaker by the age of nineteen. He set up a factory at Saint-Imier, Switzerland in 1884. The business did well and Leon moved from these rural surroundings to the heart of watch making which was La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1892. From the beginning Breitling watches and chronometers were associated with flying. In fact it is not a much publicised fact but Breitling were regular suppliers to the German army and air force. The watch also became a favourite of the British Royal Air Force. Since then there has been no looking back for the Breitling brand. It became a regular feature as a chronometer on all airplane instrument panels.

Wanting to expand from this niche of being an airman’s watch, Breitling introduced the Superocean series of watches. In this range the Breitling Chrono Superocean is a sea diver’s delight. The features of the watch or chronometer to be exact were made keeping in view the needs of a deep sea driver. The primary necessity was easy visibility of the time and the stop watch functions. It is dark in the depths of the sea and keeping that in mind the watch was given an abnormally large triangular hour hand and the other hands were also larger and luminescent. Another point taken care of was the pushpin of the stop watch. It had a special restraining ring so that the watch could not be turned on by accident. The watch glass or crystal was made specially glare proof. The hour numerals were made circular and luminescent.
The other great attributes of the Breitling Chrono Superocean were that it had a great caliber in the Breitling 13. It had the unique mechanical self-winding equipment. The watch had a forty two hour power reserve. It had 28800 exact vibrations per hour with twenty five jewels and a chronograph with a quarter of a second exactness. The watch showed day and date and was made out of a single block of steel. The ratcheted bezel was unidirectional and the watertight crown was locked by screws with two gaskets and the steel case was of the celebrated 42mm diameter.
It has ruled the diving world since 1957 as the Superocean and as the Chrono Superocean it excels all Breitling features. Naturally the most important part of a diving watch is its resistance to water in the deep sea. The earlier versions of the Chrono were resistant and watertight to a depth of 1650 feet or fifty bars.
The Breitling Chrono Superocean bears the wings logo of the company; the crown head also bears the winged B of the company. The sub dials in this model are a little recessed and the watch has a regular COSC (Controle Officiel Suisse Chronometres) certification as a chronometer.
The other remarkable thing about the Breitling Chrono Superocean is the steel bracelet with the Breitling logo on the adjustable clasp. Whether used as a diver’s watch or as a fashion statement the Breitling Chrono Superocean is a great Swiss Chronometer.
