Breitling Superocean Heritage 46
The founder of the Swiss Breitling watch company at Saint-Imier in 1884 was an accomplished watch maker by the age of nineteen. His business did well and he shifted the factory to La Chaux-de-Fonds near the French border. The factory did very well and it had a fortunate link with aviation. Soon the Breitling name was associated with airmen and airplanes. The airline industry grew in leaps and bounds and the company was the official supplier of watches to the Royal Air Force. In fact they supplied watches to the Germans and the Americans too.

Early in the twentieth century Leon Breitling could not have imagined that more than a hundred and twenty five years after his establishing the watch factory at Saint-Imier his name would be discussed in world wide watch forums. The company after falling out of the hands of the Breitling family has done well with the Schneider family. In the beginning it was an aviator’s chronometer. Today it is both an aviator as well as a deep sea diver’s watch. The outstanding model in the deep sea chronometers is the Breitling Superocean Heritage 46. It is so named because of the 46mm diameter of the chronometer. This is a genuinely certified COSC (Controle Officiele Suisse des Chronometers) watch.
The Superocean is brilliantly written below the center of the dial. The stylised B of the company is given below twelve o’clock in eighteen carat gold. The minute hand is shaped like the earlier 1957 model watch. The steel mesh bracelet is unique for this model and is called the Ocean Classic. There is a rubber version and this strap is named the Ocean Racer. The straps are easily adjustable. The Bezel is a remarkable 120 tooth construction made of steel and aluminium. The Bezel is screwed down and can be taken off the main watch if so desired by unscrewing the tiny bolts. The glass is a sapphire crystal scratch resistant marvel which has been made glare proof on both sides.
The watch comes with dials that are blue, stratus silver, black, bronze and green in a very limited edition. The chronometer has the famous self winding mechanical movement. It is a Caliber 17 and ETA 2824. The case is made of one single block of steel. It has a power reserve of forty hours which means that left alone on the bed side it will keep on ticking for forty hours till picked up and recharged by the mere natural movements of the hands and arms. The water resistance is at 200 meter or 660 feet. It operates smoothly on twenty five jewels. The watch has a steady 28,800 vibrations per hour. The crown is screw locked and has two gaskets. The thickness of the watch is 13.60mm. It weighs 109.20 g. The crown has a raised B, the shortened logo of the company. The date is in the six o’clock position as a dial aperture. Its interhorn width is 24/20mm.
